Back in Los Angeles, they had two methods they used.

Ah. Well, it's definitely not the former.
Nor is it the latter. She's been doing this long enough that although not 100% certain, has enough experience to have probable cause. She's not WANTING to break up the family. Although, Benni's dad was probably an exception given her experience dealing with him. She's only just met and talked with Tali's dad for a couple minutes. She only has a little bits of circumstantial information to work with and make a call.

Perhaps overly paranoid, but the hair on my neck went up when she realized that Flora knew Hunter's dad.

Well, at least Flora didn't mention that she had sex with his dad. Not that it was Karmen's business, but despite Flora's outward conservatism, she could have accidentally mentioned it.

Well, despite him knowing the outward differences between the two sexes (being nude at his maternal extended family,) his knowledge of it is rather spotty, if not completely conjured up by family to keep him ignorant.
