Kaleb's already got experience with the scouts, hence having the magazines. He's also spent time playing sports, hence the trophy.

She could support the two of them at a basic level on her military stipend, but she had to work various jobs to pay for college, and to net some extra money for things like scouts and sports. I'm sure she had to scrape together loose change for several months to do it, too.

This is juxtoposition of Benni's dad who just didn't want him to go out in the world and learn things that might question his parenting style.
